Meet the Mayor

Mayor Bill White formed the Mayor's Wellness Council after Men's Fitness magazine listed Houston as the "Fattest City in America."

FAQ

What is the Mayor’s New Year New You Challenge?

The Mayor’s New Year New You Challenge is a simple five week wellness program to make Houstonians more aware of their health status and to encourage them to adopt healthier lifestyles.

When will the Challenge begin?

The challenge will start on January 25, 2009 and go on for a five week period until February 28, 2009.

Why do we need a wellness Challenge?

  • Houston was named the ‘fattest city in United States’ in 2005 by the Men’s Fitness Magazine.
  • A recent community assessment in the Houston Super Neighborhoods of Magnolia, Independence Heights and Sunnyside reported extremely high rates of obesity related chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and high blood pressure.

In order to combat the high rates of obesity and chronic illnesses, Houston needs a wellness program.

How does the Challenge work?

  • A challenge card, resembling the popular game bingo, will be given to the participants.
  • The challenge card will contain wellness activities suitable for all age groups and abilities.
  • The participants will be encouraged to perform the wellness activities on the challenge card and record their progress throughout the game period.
  • On completion of the game period, a small prize will be given to the participants!

How do I play the Challenge online?
