Overview

Houston Mayor Bill White formed the Mayor’s Wellness Council and launched the Get Moving Houston fitness campaign in 2005 to address Houston’s ranking by Men’s Fitness magazine as the “Fattest City in America."  Mayor White appointed Herb Lipsman as chairman of the Mayor’s Wellness Council, which provides insights and recommendations to Mayor White and his staff.  The City of Houston is currently in the process of hiring a full-time wellness director to oversee the city employees’ wellness programs and serve as a liaison to the Mayor’s Wellness Council.

Houston has improved its position in the Men’s Fitness rankings and, in 2007, dropped to Number 6.  Las Vegas earned the unfortunate distinction as the “Fattest City in America” this past year.

For an update on the committee's progress, please see the letter from Herb Lipsman to Neal Boulton, editor-in-chief, Men’s Fitness Magazine, on January 9, 2007.
